Why would you ever convert a lossy format to a lossless format? You're not going to get any quality back. Your ALAC files likely stayed relatively small because there wasn't much data there for them to encode. If you had started with a lossless source (like a CD or vinyl) and encoded them to ALAC, then converted them to MP3, you'd see the files shrink a lot. When I rip a CD to ALAC, it'll normally use between 250mb to 750mb for a full album. My relatively small library is getting close to 40gb already.

Also, if you have a lot of TV shows or movies that you got from places other than iTunes, I recommend getting (formerly known as XBMC) to watch them.
